Interthinking Art + Science – the feature length documentary created by Márton Orosz will be screened at the
45th Hungarian Film Review in Budapest, Hungary. A documentary film about the compelling story of György Kepes, the “Father of Media Art,” that poses a thought-provoking question: “Can technology itself serve as the solution to the problems it creates?” The mesmerizing narrative of new media art’s history across the 20th century is vividly portrayed on the cinema screen through the life of the painter, photographer, designer, writer, and polymath György Kepes, a shapeshifter of modernism and the man who coined the phrase “visual culture.”

28.NOV. 2025 Analogue Holography Workshop as part of the Light Art Course / MOME – BME Budapest

In November last year, we organized an analogue holography workshop, as a collaborative initiative between the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) and the Budapest University of Technology (BME), Department of Physics. The workshop was led by Dr. Nándor Bokor, whose research spans a wide range of optical phenomena, including holography, fluorescence microscopy, and the concentration and shaping of diffuse light, as well as the methodology of teaching physics. The program was closely aligned with the educational framework of the Light Art Course initiated by the co-president of IKS, László Zsolt Bordos at MOME the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, which combines theoretical knowledge with practical experimentation in light-based artistic and scientific practices.

03.DEC.2024 – 01.MAR.2025 Inventory of the Kepes artworks / Kepes Institute

Following the unfortunate closure of the Kepes Institute in Eger, the International Kepes Society (IKS) undertook an active role in the comprehensive inventorying of the Kepes Legacy. The inventory process was led by Ágota Szilasi, museologist of the Castle Museum (Vármúzeum), together with her professional team. The collection—including paintings, photographs, photograms, and archival documents—has since been carefully documented and is currently preserved in a professional, secure, and climate-controlled storage environment, ensuring the long-term conservation of György Kepes’s artistic and intellectual heritage.

09-10.OCT.2024 Visiting Kepes’s summer cottage and studio in Cape Cod

Márton Orosz and László Zsolt Bordos, the two presidents of IKS, had the opportunity to visit the Kepes Studio on Cape Cod, where they carried out archival research and documentation. The summer cottage studio was designed by Marcel Breuer, a close friend and collaborator of Kepes. In the course of the visit, the Society members also toured Breuer’s former residence, where they met Peter McMahon, Director of the Cape Cod Modern House Trust (CCMHT), strengthening professional connections related to modern architectural and cultural heritage. During this visit, the Society also assisted Juliette Kepes Stone, daughter of György Kepes, with the inventory of Kepes’s works in Boston, contributing to the ongoing preservation of the Kepes legacy.

23 OCT. 2023 CAVS 55 Anniversary at MIT Massachussets, Boston

In celebration of the 55th anniversary of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS), founded by György Kepes, the feature-length documentary Interthinking Art + Science, directed by Márton Orosz, had its American premiere at MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. The screening marked a significant moment in reflecting on Kepes’s interdisciplinary vision that shaped CAVS. During this occasion, members of the International Kepes Society also had the opportunity to visit the residency of Otto Piene and Elisabeth Goldring, where a professional gathering was held with former students and collaborators of Kepes at MIT. This meeting offered a rare and meaningful opportunity to reconnect with Kepes’s intellectual descendants and to engage in dialogue on the continuing relevance of art–science collaboration.

14-15.SEP. 2023 Light Symposium at MOME and two exhibitions in Budapest and Eger

The 30th International Light Art Symposium, organized by IKS, took place on Sept. 14–15, 2023 at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) in Budapest. Marking three decades of continuous dialogue, the symposium brought together invited artists and researchers working at the intersection of art, science, and technology – Jeffrey Shaw, Michael Naimark, Tamás Waliczky, to mention a few – to reflect on the aesthetic, conceptual, and creative dimensions of light. The symposium emphasized interdisciplinary exchange, the presentation of universal research outcomes, and the support of artistic and research-based practices. The symposium was free and open to the public, with English live translation provided throughout, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for a broad international audience.
